Taking care of your suede shoes!

How to Clean Suede Shoes in 8 Steps:

STEP 1.) Preparation

Insert shoe trees or stuff your shoes with newspaper to maintain their shape while cleaning. Allow mud or dirt to dry completely before starting to avoid making stains worse.

STEP 2.) Remove Excess Dirt

Use a suede brush or an old toothbrush to gently brush away dirt from the surface. Suede brushes often have two sides: one with steel bristles and one with rubber bristles. Always brush in one direction and avoid circular motions to prevent damaging the suede. If you don’t have a brush, use a clean cloth, but avoid using water or soap.

STEP 3.) Remove Surface Stains

For light stains, use a special suede eraser. No suede eraser? A regular pencil eraser can also work. Rub gently over the stain in a back-and-forth motion to lift small marks without harming the material.

STEP 4.) Treat Stains

  • Water stains: Surprisingly, water can help. Use a damp brush to lightly apply water to the entire shoe. Dab off excess moisture with a dry cloth and let the shoe dry naturally.
  • Grease or oil stains: Use a small nail brush and warm water to gently clean the stain.
  • Mud stains: Allow the mud to dry completely, then scrape off the crust and brush away the remaining dirt.

STEP 5.) Restore Suede

For visible scuffs or worn areas, use a slightly rougher brush to gently lift the suede fibers, always brushing in one direction. Crêpe brushes are particularly effective for restoring worn areas and refreshing the color.

STEP 6.) Air Dry

Always let suede shoes air dry in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators, which can dry out and damage the suede. Use shoe trees or unprinted paper to help maintain the shape as the shoes dry.

STEP 7.) Finish Brushing

Once the shoes are completely dry, brush them again to lift the suede fibers and make them look fresh and new.

STEP 8.) Protect

Apply a suede spray to shield your shoes from stains and discoloration. This will also maintain their water-repellent properties.

What is suède?

Suede is a type of leather made from the underside of an animal's hide. It has a soft, textured surface and is often associated with a luxurious look. The main difference between suede and traditional leather (like full-grain leather) is that suede is processed from the inner part of the hide, giving it a velvety, plush finish.

Why should you care for suede?

Proper maintenance of suede shoes is essential to prevent stains, drying out, and damage. Suede is sensitive to water, dirt, and wear, so regular care helps preserve its texture and extends the life of your shoes.
